At the Moulin Rouge is an oil painting by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1892–95) in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago. It measures 123 × 141 cm.
In the pictureInside a cabaret, five men and women sit around a table. In the back, in front of a mirror, a red-haired dancer adjusts her hair, and beside her a short man and a tall man walk past. At the front right, the face of a woman lit by green light thrusts into the picture from outside the frame. The diagonal of a railing cuts across the picture.
BackgroundThe work dates from 1892–95. The Moulin Rouge was a cabaret in Montmartre, and Toulouse-Lautrec was both a regular there and its poster artist. The figures in the painting are all real people: the short man passing in the back is Toulouse-Lautrec himself, and the tall man beside him is his cousin. The green face at the right is the singer May Milton. This section was once cut off and later reattached.
Puzzle tipDivide it into the green face, the red hair, the black clothing, and the orange railing and floor. Complete the five figures at the table first, then use the diagonal of the railing to separate front from back. The mirror and lights in the background are blurry and difficult, so leave them for last. The green face at the right sits on the edge, so fit it together with the border pieces.
