Jacket is a textile by an unknown maker (1840–80) in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It measures 58.4 cm.
In the pictureIn the shared photograph, this entry is the red jacket at the top. It is made of red patterned silk with a large round collar covering the shoulders, and the sleeves puff out widely at the shoulder before narrowing at the forearm. Gold metallic-thread tassels edge the collar, front opening, hem and wrists, and the short jacket ends above the hips. A floral pattern is woven into the silk and shows depending on the light. The mannequin's hands are brought together in front of the chest, so the wrist tassels also gather in the center. Below it continues the blue dress with metal bands. The neckline is cut in a shallow V.
BackgroundAccording to the record, the materials are silk, metal and cotton, the length at center back is 58.4 cm, and it is classified as a woman's outer garment. It entered in the same year through the same fund as the dress, but the materials list differs slightly: cotton is listed for this jacket instead of linen. The sleeves, puffed wide at the shoulder, resemble a form fashionable in Western European women's dress in the 1830s. The Brooklyn Museum purchased it in 1918 through the Frederick Loeser Fund, and it received the number 2009.300.608, immediately after the blue dress (2009.300.607). Unlike the dress in the same photograph, this item is classified separately as a woman's outer garment.
Puzzle tipThe collar, body and sleeves of the red jacket are all the same color, so the gold tassels are the surest boundary lines. Go around the rounded outline first with the tassels on the collar edge, then fix the center with the joined hands and wrist tassels. Tell left from right on the puffed sleeves by the way the silk's sheen brightens toward the outside. Then fill the bottom with the metal bands of the blue dress. The white mannequin neck and the knob of the stand are the reference at top center. 100 pieces work well.
