The agility and audacity of Juanito Apiñani in [the ring] at Madrid, plate 20 from "La Tauromaquia" is a print by Goya (1816) in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It measures 24.5 × 35.3 cm.
In the pictureIn the middle of an empty bullring, a man plants a long pole in the ground and, his body suspended in the air, vaults over a charging bull. The bull passes just beneath the pole with its head lowered, and the man's shadow falls on the sand. The stands behind are rendered dark, with faces only faintly visible.
BackgroundLa Tauromaquia is a series of 33 bullfighting prints that Goya published in 1816, covering the history of bullfighting and famous scenes from it. This scene shows a feat performed in the Madrid bullring by a bullfighter named Juanito Apiñani, recording, just as the title says, his "agility and audacity." Goya incised the lines in etching and laid in gray tones with aquatint, separating the brightness of the sandy arena from the darkness of the stands. The wide empty space heightens the tension between the man and the bull.
Puzzle tipHalf the picture is empty sand, so the pieces look alike. Fit the pieces of the bull, the man, and the pole first, complete the dark band of the stands at the top, and then fill in the empty space. The paper margin and the plate border pieces have straight lines, which makes the edges easy to find.
