Portrait of an Old Man is an oil painting by Francisco Domingo y Marqués (1882) in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It measures 27.3 × 22.2 cm.
In the pictureIn a dark room, a white-haired old man sits sunk deep into a large armchair. A white shirt shows slightly beneath his black clothes, his hands are folded on his knees, and his face turns to the left. The brushwork is rough and quick, and the museum's image is black and white. It is a small panel, 27 cm tall.
BackgroundFrancisco Domingo y Marqués, a native of Valencia, worked in Paris and became popular for painting figures and interiors with quick strokes on small panels. Who this old man was has not been recorded, but his unposed bearing and expression give the picture the familiarity of a study of someone close to the painter rather than a commissioned portrait.
Puzzle tipBlack and white and mostly dark, this one is hard. Fit the light pieces of the face, white hair, shirt and hands first, and use the light armrest pieces of the chair to establish the shape. Tell the remaining dark pieces apart by the direction of the brushstrokes. We recommend 24 or 48 pieces.
