The Bedroom is an oil painting by Vincent van Gogh (1889) in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago. It measures 73.6 × 92.3 cm.

The Bedroom — Vincent van Gogh

In the pictureIn a narrow room, a yellow wooden bed fills the right side, made up with a red blanket and white pillows. On the left wall are a window and a small table, and a few pictures and a mirror hang on the walls. Two yellow chairs, blue walls with a tinge of lilac, a green window frame, and a floor of mixed light green and pink brushstrokes. The perspective is skewed, so the room looks as if it might spill forward.

BackgroundHe first painted it in Arles in October 1888 (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam); this is the second version, painted the following September in Saint-Rémy from that first picture. The third is at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Van Gogh wrote to his brother that the painting should suggest "rest or sleep," and that he wanted to express it through color alone. The walls lean partly because the walls of that room really did lean.

Puzzle tipThe colors divide into broad areas, so sorting is easy: yellow (bed, chairs), blue (walls, door), red (blanket), green (window), light green and pink (floor). Fix the outlines of the bed and chairs first; the pictures and mirror on the wall and the window are the reference points. The floor brushstrokes run diagonally, so zoom in to tell the pieces apart.
