Coat is a textile by an unknown maker (1900) in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It measures 102.2 cm.
In the pictureThis is a long leather coat shown on a mannequin. The ivory leather is densely embroidered with flowers and leaves in red, green and black thread, and brown fur trims the neckline, front opening and cuffs. The front closes with fur buttons, and the coat reaches below the knees.
BackgroundCoats of sheepskin turned so the fleece lies inside and the outer surface is embroidered were worn as formal winter dress in the countryside of Eastern Europe, in Hungary, Romania, Ukraine and elsewhere. The density of the embroidery showed a family's means, and brides and grooms sometimes wore such coats at their weddings. This coat of 1900 comes from the period when the tradition was at its most splendid.
Puzzle tipThe pieces divide into red embroidery, ivory leather and brown fur. Go around the outline of the coat first with the fur trim pieces, then join the embroidered pieces by the direction of the floral pattern. The white parts of the mannequin are reference points. 100 pieces work well.
