Seollal Korean Painting Puzzles

10 works

Ten Joseon-dynasty paintings that are good to solve with family over the Seollal (Korean New Year) holiday. It opens with a hawk greeting the New Year's sunrise (Hawk at Sunrise) and goes on to a grapevine climbed by squirrels, bamboo in the wind and a scholar's desk (chaekgado). Shades of ink are at the heart of these paintings, so the fun is in fitting them by the flow of the lines rather than by color, and 24 to 48 pieces is just right for children and grandparents to do together. All of them are public-domain works released by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
